What to wear to your session
Tips and tricks to look your best in your photographs
Choosing what to wear for your family photoshoot doesn’t have to be stressful—it should be part of the fun! The right outfit choices can elevate your images, help you feel comfortable and confident, and keep the focus where it belongs: on the connection you share as a family.
Here’s my go-to guide for styling your family, whether you’re snuggling on the couch at home or playing in the golden light outdoors.
Colours and tones
Before diving into individual outfits, think about an overall colour scheme. Neutrals (like cream, brown, mustard, tan, white, olive and pastels.) photograph beautifully and keep things timeless. You can add subtle pops of colour or texture—think denim, linen, knitwear, or a floral print—to create interest.
Avoid everyone wearing the exact same outfit (e.g., all white tees and jeans)—coordinated, not matching, is the sweet spot.
Textures and fabrics
Outdoor Family Sessions
Dress for the Season and Location
Autumn/Winter: Embrace layers! Chunky knits, textured scarves, boots, and warm tones like rust, mustard, and forest green work beautifully against nature’s palette.
Spring/Summer: Lighter fabrics like cotton, linen, or flowy dresses move beautifully and keep you cool. Earthy tones, soft blues, dusty pinks, and whites pop against greenery or a beach backdrop.
Long dresses, loose shirts, and kids’ overalls or rompers not only look gorgeous but allow natural movement—perfect for playful, candid shots.
Choose shoes that are comfortable for walking on grass, sand, or trails. Bare feet on the beach? Always a yes.
Indoor Family Sessions
Keep it Cosy and Real
Home sessions are all about comfort and authenticity. Opt for soft, lived-in clothing: knits, neutral tees, relaxed jeans or linen, cotton onesies for little ones, and barefoot is perfect.
Mind the Background
Think about your home’s colour tones. If your space has lots of warm tones (wood, beige, creams), stick with earthy or neutral outfits. If it’s bright and airy, soft pastels and whites look beautiful.
Layers Work Indoors Too
Light cardigans, wraps, or textures like waffle and ribbed fabrics add depth without bulk.
A few extra tips
Avoid big logos, bold prints and characters—As cute and trendy as they look in real life, these can appear dated and distract from your emotions and connections.
Try to steer clear of dark colours like black, navy, and deep greys, they tend to lose all detail and can feel a bit harsh in natural light.
Iron or steam outfits the night before (wrinkles show up more than you think!).
Lay everything out ahead of time, including accessories and backup clothes for little ones.
Bring options—especially for kids. Accidents happen and it’s always nice to have a spare outfit.
