Chasing sunlight and mischief at Williamstown Jawbone Reserve
There’s something really special about photographing your own family — the chaos, the love, the tiny in-between moments you know so well. Early Autumn, we headed down to Williamstown's Jawbone Reserve for a golden hour session, and as the light dipped low over the water, I couldn’t help but smile at how beautifully imperfect it all was.
The sun was absolutely divine — that soft, golden light that wraps everything in warmth, even on a crisp day. As the weather cooled I could dress the kids in textured knits and layers (well, the child who would let me!), which not only looked gorgeous but also added a cozy, seasonal feel to the images. I love how texture brings out the mood in photos, especially in that gentle evening light.
Of course, photographing your own children means letting go of expectations — and that’s exactly what I did. They were full of energy, a little bit cheeky, and very determined to do things their way (which, let’s be honest, is just part of the fun). Rather than trying to direct them into stiff poses, I let them roam, explore, and just be. What unfolded was a beautiful, unscripted story: messy hair, silly giggles, tiny hands in the sand, and bursts of laughter echoing across the reserve.
Watching them play together reminded me why I love this kind of photography — it’s not about perfection, it’s about presence. The way they reached for each other’s hands, raced along the tracks, or paused to throw rocks into the water… those are the real moments that matter. Capturing their connection, their personalities, and their wild little spirits was a gift I’ll treasure.
Jawbone Reserve is a hidden gem — peaceful, expansive, and absolutely glowing at sunset. The contrast of the golden light against the cool blues of the water made every frame feel dreamy and timeless. If you're thinking of a family session during the cooler months, don’t underestimate the magic of soft knits, gentle light, and a relaxed setting where kids can just be kids.
It might not have been the most "perfectly behaved" shoot — but it was real, it was ours, and it was full of love.
